This morning hundreds of people in green hard hats gathered in central London.
Under the banner of Stop Climate Chaos, organisations as diverse as the Women’s Institute, faith groups, Oxfam, TearFund, renewable energy companies, trade unions and charities including WWF called on the government to do one thing: boost our economy and international leadership by supporting renewable energy and green business.
Headlines in recent weeks have made clear that the government is deeply divided about the future of energy and protecting the environment. Despite assurances that they are united, the truth is that the split is widening, and it’s clear that these senior-level disputes are becoming increasingly difficult to resolve. David Cameron needs to step in now and show leadership – for the good of the country.
All these groups, including here at WWF, believe that the green economy is the best bet for our country’s future.
The CBI – the voice of UK business – believes that too. It said recently that the UK can be a “global front-runner in the shift to low-carbon”, further highlighting the fact that a third of the UK’s economic growth in the last two years came from green business. But some parts of the Government don’t want to hear that good news story.
So today our voice rang out loud and clear. Green is working.
