Not a promising start to my first day in Rio – the bus I was on began heading in the opposite direction to the conference venue, because Copacabana Beach road was closed for jogging. I hoped that wasn’t sending some kind of message to the delegates about the direction this week’s negotiations would go. Still, as long as we get there in the end…

Day 2 began better – it was sunnier and even with the jam-packed morning traffic the bus headed in the right direction. Negotiations still going at a snail’s pace though…

The good news is that the organisers want more rooms for negotiations – let’s hope that energises things! The bad news is that all the ‘in-site’ side-events have to move or be stopped – and since we have a side-event with Malaysian and Brazilian colleagues and government delegates, who’ve travelled thousands of miles to be here, people are running around in circles to try and save the situation.

We’ll let you know how it turns out. Meanwhile, here’s a brief outline of our planned side-event on forest protection in Brazil and Malaysia…
